Are Real Artist’s Able to Sell their NFT’s or Only Celebrities and Influencers?

If you are real artist or the creative sort, it can be difficult to sell your NFT’s on Rarible, Opensea, and other places. I mean with all the press being given to Beeple’s $69,000,000 NFT auctioned recently by Christie’s, how would you distinguish yourself from the host of celebrities and influencers who get articles written about their NFT creations daily? You can’t really. Unless you pay up for a marketing team to put your name and creations out there full-time.

Let’s face it, those that have the Ethereum to part with are just buying bragging rights and an asset they may be able to resell later for more money. That Non-Fungible token may just stay in the digital space the buyer obtained it from, and it may never be displayed in their homes. Who wouldn’t want to brag about procuring rapper Snoop Dogg’s sold out NFT’s he had put on sale as a part of the collection titled “A Journey with the Dogg”? Or being part of the now revoked Elon Musk tweet NFT that sold for more than $1,000,000? Or even taking part in the “cash me outside” Danielle Bregoli as Bhad Bhabie, selling her iconic meme as a NFT?

These are strange times. Just yesterday evening on Opensea, a tiny clip of Saturday Night Live’s skit “What the Hell’s an NFT?” was auctioned off for 171.99ETH or $362,830. It was bought by a character called “Dr_Dumpling”. An interesting note is that the runner-up of the auction called themselves “JeffBezosForeskin”, and had offered 163.8ETH ($348,546.74). I have a feeling that these guys are Ethereum miners with too much time on their hand.

The question is, do people who search for art on Opensea, Rarible, Zora, Nifty Gateway, SuperRare, Makersplace, and other sites want art or just want to be part of the history and evolution of NFT’s? Are they seeking to have their name affiliated with something that people will read about for a few days in social media? Or are they wanting something exceptional. “Non-fungible” more or less means that it’s unique and can’t be replaced with something else. Something special. Not necessarily something that will be the talk of social media and then forgotten like the Slinky metal toy.

Well, regardless I’ve cast my line into this pond of artists, celebrities, influencers, and thrill-seekers. I like to be creative, so I figure I’ll do what I like and see if I can get some crypto for it. Creating a NFT is not as easy as it looks, but any number of Youtube videos can help sort that out. I found a couple of good ones that enabled me to tackle the task on Rarible and Opensea and mint my NFT’s in a few hours. What is surprising is the cost associated with putting up just one NFT on Rarible. That cost is the Ethereum gas fees. To put up two NFT’s on Rarible, it set me back about $160.00CAD. I used Metamask to connect to both Rarible and Opensea, and I’ll tell you this… don’t try to cut costs by making the ETH transaction go slowly. Your transaction will take forever to process or may not go through at all. Then you will have lost money and you’ll have to pay again to get your NFT up on the site. I learned this information from Reddit ahead of time, so I saved myself some aggravation.

The people who buy an artist’s work usually do a lot of research on them first. They aren’t people that they know personally. Hence, I don’t expect to get rich from minting my own NFT’s and putting them on these sites. Nobody knows me as an artist (just yet). But I am curious as to how this will out play out in the future for me on the blockchain, and if I have a future as a part-time, unknown artist. I just create for peace of mind. If other people like my art and want to give me good feels, then that is appreciated.

Let me know what you think about NFT artists and creators. Do you think NTF prices are in a bubble? Are you wanting to get in? Where do you think NFT’s will go from here? Let’s talk about it; you can also connect with me on Clubhouse as @msjag.
